There must be many people like me, who have graduated to HD camcorders and who have pondered long and hard about what to do with their AVCHD footage. To edit or not and, if so, what editing app to use. To try burning you own DVDs from unedited footage. What to play your DVDs on. The list of questions is endless.
One relatively simple way forward is to get a Canon DW-100. I can confirm that this does what it's claimed to do, at least with Canon camcorders. It records your AVCHD footage direct to DVD in it's original quality. The resulting disc is playable on the Playstation 3 or Blu Ray player. But if your intention is to produce DVD videos that are playable on standard DVD players, then you will have to record your original footage at a lower quality. In the case of the Canon HF10, this means XP mode or lower. However, having bought an HD camcorder, who would want to do this? I bought mine for state-of-the-art video quality, and keep it on the highest quality setting. I can view the recorded footage on PS3 - family and friends will just have to get Blu Ray players!
As for editing AVCHD footage, that will have to wait for the quantum computer..... it really isn't worth the effort at the moment.

If you're looking for a quick and easy way to transfer SD and HD recordings to DVD (inluding dual layer) without using a computer, this does what it says on the tin. However, it has some serious limitations. The first is that you can't change the names of your recordings or label the disc, so when you play back your disc, the menu just shows a list of the dates the recordings were made, which is very basic. The second is that you can't add to a disc once you've moved across some recordings, because the burner automatically finalises the disc. The manual implies that it depends on the size and number of files as to whether the disc is finalised, but I transferred two short scenes to test the burner and it still finalised the disc. This isn't too much of a problem if the disc is rewritable - you can just redo the copy with extra scenes later - but is a real issue with non-rewritable discs. The third limitation is that it only works with -R, -R DL and -RW discs, not +R, +R DL or +RW.

This hd burner was purchased to archive video in high definition taken with a Canon HG 10 Camcorder. It does exactly that and is easy to use.
Quality of playback is excellent. However remember that high definition
storage requires space namely 3 dvd discs for 1 hour and a half of video footage.
No editing facility is available but for personal use this is not a disadvantage.
An excellent product

Bought this for the arrival of my first child. Didn't want anything too fancy, just good enough to record fun moments.

Good value for money, although I find the unit a bit plasticky and not that solid. It fits well into my hand and is light and portable though.

I chose a DVD camcorder because I thought I would just use the DVD straight from camera into my DVD player. However, after using it for a while I have now purchased editing software as my videos really need some work! The discs need finalised in camera before playing but they play fine and it is a quick result.

Recording to DVD has advantages and disadvantages:-
For - can play easily in DVD player, extract video to PC quickly for editing, cheap media.
Against - not the greatest quality, the whirring of the DVD recorder can be heard quite frequently on all videos; this can be a pain when recording in quiet areas like indoors.

Overall I can say I am content with my purchase but I will likely upgrade to something of better quality as it is not great.

If all you want to do is capture some family moments etc. then this is fine. For budding movie makers a better quality camera would be more satisfying.

Excellent picture and sound quality, good quality build, reasonable amount of HDD storage (80GB). Would have been improved with built in viewfinder as opposed to flip out LCD screen only,In common with most other camcorders this camcorder suffers from the usual wind noise problems, reasonable battery life however a spare battery is always recommended. Overall good value for money when purchased from Amazon direct as opposed to Sony direct, saved a bundle.Sony HDRXR105E High Definition Handycam Camcorder With Built-In 80GB Hard Disc Drive (33hrs)

Bought for recent holiday in North America. Just the ticket. Simple to use and operate as previous reviewers have stated. Took a bit of getting used to not having a viewfinder, bt once you get used to the LCD display screen it is fine, even an advantage when filming through a crowd, as you can just hold the camera up above your head and angle the screen so that you can see what you are filming.
Amazing telemacro capabilty. Good zoom, difficult to avoid wobble at extreme zoom without tripod.
A remote control would have been nice, not even an optional extra on this model.
One word of caution, 80GB hard drive will only record about 9 hours of the high quality HD FD video, 33 hours is for Standard Definition recordings.
Lense filters are very hard to come, even the Sony ones.
Battery capacity, life and recharge times are good, although a back-up battery is advisable.
Comes with editing software for use on PC's. This is not needed if you have the latest Apple Mac's as Imovie handles the HD FD .mst file format by itself.

We bought this camera to film our wedding with. The 80GB hard-drive is great and can record hours and hours of high quality HD footage. We were amazed at the quality of the footage it is able to take but is best suited to outside conditions in natural light. The camera is compact and extremely easy and intuitive to use. We have not tried taking the videos off the camera yet and onto the PC / DVDs but I expect this will be fairly easy to do.

This camera is simply wonderful. With a large memory you can record hours of full HD footage, and this really is full HD unlike some rival cameras, without the need for SD cards or memory sticks. The battery lasts for almost as long as the memory bu8t unofficial replacement batteries can be bought cheaply. The footage the camera can achieve is truly impressive and as good as anything on TV provided you have plenty of light, as in low light noise will start to creep in and quality will be lessened. The lack of ability to attach external microphones is the only other downside as with distance subjects the sound quality can also be found wanting. But provided you're ina well lit area and reasonably close to your subjects you should be fine.
